It is this accurate and realistic portrayal of racism and Columbia's treatment of non-whites and people of color and Comstock's cult-leader-like behavior that makes Comstock and his city so frightening and disgusting. Its racism and simply horrendous treatment of anyone who is not "white", a prime example of which is the infamous lottery game at the beginning of the game, where the crowd is eager to stone an interracial couple to death, is incredibly chillingly reminiscent of 20th century America, where lynching was used incredibly cruel treatment of African Americans, while treating it as a pleasant and rewarding event. The fact that he forces the entire city to worship him and his general behavior is eerily similar to real-life cult leaders manipulating their followers into doing whatever the leader wants, even committing suicide without the slightest hesitation.
